  • This lesson covers the concepts upon which scrum is based. We look into the reasons for and effects of iterating, the use of time-boxing and feedback loops.

  • In this lesson we review the agile manifesto and look at how well scrum aligns to its values and principles.

  • We examine the intent of scrum, reviewing and discussing the pillars that support scrum along with the importance of the scrum values.

  • We start our look at the scrum framework by explaining its component parts - the 3 scrum roles, the 3 artefacts (and corresponding commitments), and the 5 scrum events.

  • Following the overview of the scrum components, we examine how scrum works. We look at the flow of work through scrum, and demonstrate it by a scrum simulation activity.

  • The scrum simulation gives us an initial insight into the scrum roles: who does what and who is responsible for what. The scrum guide provides an overview of the roles but we dive deeper, and use scenarios and another activity to get clarity for everyone in the scrum team.

  • As servant-leader to the team the scrum master supports the product owner and the delivery team. This section of the course looks at the other scrum roles and explores what support they need and how the scrum master supports them.

  • In understanding how to support the scrum team, we take a look at real-world situations, and what others commonly use to implement scrum successfully. We take a deeper look into product backlog refinement, user stories and other types of work item.

  • In addition to scrum, we sometimes find organisations using other agile-aligned frameworks, methods and approaches instead of or alongside scrum. Scrum masters need to have an appreciation of these, especially if any are used alongside scrum. In this section of the course we provide an overview of kanban and lean UX, and explain why and how these may be implemented alongside scrum. We provide some tips on how to manage the integration of scrum with other approaches and red flags to look out for.

It utilises time-boxing and iteration with feedback loops to deliver software efficiently, with a focus on understanding and prioritising the work of the scrum team.

It will be especially useful for those people who are moving from a traditional way of developing and managing software development teams to a more agile approach - project managers and software development team leads.

It's also useful for anyone working in a software development team that would like to move into more of a leadership role - supporting the team to deliver valuable software.

Our scrum master course covers what scrum is and how it is used.  It specifically concentrates on the role of the scrum master.

Scrum is a simple but very effective way to deliver valuable software efficiently.  It's used by thousands of organisations across the world and much of its concepts and components have become commonplace.

The role of Scrum Master is central to the successful implementation of scrum.  As a Scrum Master you will become the servant-leader to the team - owning the implementation of scrum in the scrum team.

Our scrum master training covers the complete scrum framework, providing not just an understanding of the scrum master role, but also how to support the delivery team and the product owner.  We also provide lots of context for scrum, explaining how it aligns with agile values and principles, and how it can be used instead of, or alongside other approaches like kanban and lean UX.

Our remote (online) course covers the same topics as our face-to-face course.  We have adapted some of the activities so that we can deliver them remotely, but they are not identical.

Our online course has shorter lessons and activities.  Our adapted online face-to-face activities are slightly more directed than when we run them face-to-face.  We've also found that online learning tends to feel much more intensive so we build in more, but shorter breakout slots.

We offer our standard public Scrum Master course, as a 2 day, in-person or fully remote (online) course.

Our face-to-face course is normally run in Sheffield or London, but we do sometimes run our course in other locations if it suits all of the course delegates - just let us know your preference.

Running the course face-to-face allows us to demonstrate many of the topics we cover using a variety of activities, workshops and games.

There is no exam as part of the course, and as with all our courses, attendance and engagement during all of the course is all that is required to receive your Joule Digital course completion certificate.

NOTE:  This is not a Scrum Alliance certified scrum master training course.  However it does cover all of the topics (and more) that a Certified Scrum Master Training course provides for a fraction of the cost, and will allow delegates to work as Scrum Masters.
